Interview with Herbie Langhans, Seventh Avenue (October 28, 2004)

1. Hi, first off I just want to congratulate you on your new album. To new fans could your please fill us in on the history behind it all?

We started to play music in 89 with another band name, in 92 we changed our band name to Seventh Avenue and I began to sing in the band as well (before that I played the rhythm guitar).

We made some demos, one self produced CD and then 2 CD's on a small Label. In the new Millennium we got a deal with Massacre and two years ago we released the album "Between The Worlds" and a new Seventh Avenue Saga was born. Now after all these years I am the only one left, who has been in the band from the beginning. Now we have the best Line Up ever and we really love our new album. That’s our history in a short form.

2. How has your new album been received by the media?

We didn’t have so much response so far because all starts now, but the first reviews were very good, and we hope it goes on in this way.

3. I know artists are not happy to categorize their music, but how would you describe your music to an outsider?

We play Classic Metal from the 80th with a little modern sound, its Power metal with speed, melodic, and a lot of pure Energy. Its rough pure Classic Metal.

4. Where does your inspiration come from, both musically and lyrically?

Music: I hear Metal since I was 12 years old and a lot of bands have inspired me through the years from Metallica, Whitesnake, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Helloween, Rage..... there are many bands. The time must be right, when I write songs, I must have ideas in my head (melodies, riffs... ). I must feel the music when I start to write. I can’t go in a room and write 3 songs in 2 days, because sometime I need a long time to write one song.

Lyrics: The main theme of the lyrics are Christian stories from the Bible, how it is to live as a Christian, the everlasting fight against evil, and how the best party ever will be in Heaven. Our drummer mostly writes the lyrics.

5. What topics do you deal with in your lyrics and why?

Its as I told its Christian themes, because we are a Christian band and we want to show the world that Christians can rock and party. And that Christians love METAL too. We didn’t want to preach too much, but we want to show, that there is also a Heaven and we hope to invite a lot of people to our party some day in Heaven.

6. Who has produced and mixed the album, and are you pleased with the end result?

We record the new album again in our own Studio - Woodwind Studio, because today you don't receive so much money from the labels. I produced the album completely alone, except for the vocals, where we once more had Victor Smolski to produce. We mixed the album alone in our studio with our sound engineer - Florian Keupp. Mastering was done at the Gate Studio with Sascha Paeth. It was only the second album we produced in our studio. I think the sound is O.K. and we have some ideas, how to take it a step further next time (and better and better...).

7. Who has done the artwork? And how important do you feel it is to have a great cover?

It's from a guy here in Germany, who we meet him on a Festival - his name is Peter Gundlach. He is also the singer in a metal band. I think it's important to have a good cover, and it must also show a new fan, what kind of music is inside, the cover is the mirror of the music.

8. Do you have any touring plans?

We have a tour in Jan / Feb in South America, where we will be playing in many different countries. And we also plan to record a live-album there. But for Europe there are no plans at the moment, but I hope there will come some soon. But of course we plan to play many single shows and festivals in Europe.

9. How do you feel about the co-operation with your label, and are you satisfied?

For them we are a newcomer band, but they make a good job. I hope, they will give us the possibility to play a support tour with a cool band. But we will see, what the new album will bring.

10. The Internet is a very important source for many music fans - how do you use the Internet and how important is it for you and other bands?

I like the Internet and I use it a lot (I love email), because its so easy to write to people, to make interviews, arrange some stuff .... meet fans there and to read a lot about other bands. It makes us one big family. And I don’t see the danger in the Metal scene with so many people downloading, because I like to have the original CD with booklet..... and I think a lot of fans thinks so too.

11. How do you see the heavy metal scene at the moment?

I think, there is a good scene with a lot of different styles, but also a lot of bad s... I think the metal scene is an important part of the music industry. But what I don’t like is when metal bands talk bad about each other, black metal / classic metal, speed metal / hardcore..... its all metal in my book and we must stand together, no matter what kind of metal we play!

12. To finish things off - could you pls. make a all-time Top 5 or sort of the 5 most important albums in your opinion?

1. Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
2. Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys, Part 1 & 2
3. AC/DC

4. Stryper - To Hell With The Devil (its an important album in the Christian Scene)
5. Metallica - Kill'em All (SPEEEEED METAL)

I hope its O.K. for you !
