Interview with Perzonal War (December 2, 2005)

Hi, first off all I just want to congratulate you on your new album. To new fans could your please fill us in on the history behind it all?
Perzonal War - PERZONAL WAR was founded by Matthias Zimmer (vocals; guitar), Martin Buchwalter (drums), Sascha Kerschgens (guitar) and Frank Buchwalter (bass) in 1996. After a couple of demo releases the band recorded their first album "The Inside" in 1998 which got very good reviews in the magazines all over Europe .

In the beginning of 2000, the band recorded their second album "NewtimeChaos". The album was released in May 2000 with the label "B.Mind Records". In March 2002, Personal War changed the name from "Personal War" to "Perzonal War" because of legal reasons and signed a deal with AFM-Records.

In July 2002 the 3rd album "Different but the same" was released worldwide over AFM Records. Also Victor Smolski from RAGE played a couple of guitar solos on the album and helped the band in the studio. The album got amazing reviews and lots of high sound check positions in the important Metal Magazines.

After lots of live gigs and Festivals (among other on the Sziget Festival in Budapest , as support for RAGE and NEVERMORE) bass player Frank Buchwalter split with the band in January 2003. In June 2003, PERZONAL WAR entered the studio again to begin with the work on the album "Faces". During the recordings, bass player Sven Krautkraemer joined the band and completed the strongest PERZONAL WAR line up so far.

The band also recorded a video for the single "My Secret" with a very popular German film team. After that the band played a very successful Tour together with "Circle to Circle" and "Blaze". "Faces" is the band’s strongest release so far and the very high sound check positions (Rock Hard Germany 10 x dynamite, Metal Hammer Germany Sound check position 7 etc.) and also the entry in the German Metal-DJ Charts at position 10 speak for themselves. The Clip to "My Secret" is shown in whole Europe and especially in Holland it runs 10 times a day in "High rotation" on "The Box".

Now in 2005 the youngest release ”WHEN TIMES TURN RED” is a huge step forward for the band and they have finally find their own style. The superb reviews in the magazines ( Metal Hammer Germany Sound check position 3, Rock Hard Germany 10x Dynamite ) speak for themselves again !! So be prepared what happens next ;-)

Who has produced and mixed the album? Are you pleased with the result?
Perzonal War - Martin (..Our drummer ) did all the work – and we all think he did a killer job !!!

Who has done the artwork? And how important do you feel it is to have a great cover?
Perzonal War - …A friend of us. Normally Metti doing this, but he don’t have the time for it.

We just wanted a cover with a simple message and with a simple logo – and it should be “catchy” for the eyes. So we all like it and we think the result is really cool.

How has your new album been received by the media?
Perzonal War - Really good so far  - especially the big Zines like Metal Hammer and Rock Hard like our music, too. That is a good feeling and made us believe in our music!

How would you describe your music?
Perzonal War - It could be a mixture between Thrash, Power and Heavy Metal with modern elements in it and with alternative moments…or just ROCK’N’ROLL!

Which bands from then and from nowadays have their influence on Perzonal War?
Perzonal War - Bands like Testament, Forbidden, Nevermore, Morgana Lefay, Paradise Lost from the past – and Bands like Korn, Creed, Tea Party and so on from nowadays.

What influences Metti when writing songs and in what way are songs made within Perzonal War?
Perzonal War - People, all the shit happens in this world now, love.

Are lyrics written prior to a song or are they written to fit the music?
Perzonal War - …They are written to fit the music.

Which song do you consider to be the best one you have ever written?
Perzonal War - Hmm, I don’t know what is Metti’s favourite song…but for me it’s every song on the new record, especially “hope dies last”, ”when time turns red” and “inferno” – because they fit absolutely in this shitty world without much hope for some better days.

Do you have any touring plans?
Perzonal War - We’re on tour in December across Europe with Destruction and Candlemass, and we hope that we can do a tour in the beginning of the next year too ! Be prepared...

Let’s speculate – you have been granted a free slot on a tour of your own choice – who would be your ideal touring partners?
Perzonal War - Nevermore, Testament, Morgana Lefay, Rage, In Flames…and for myself  of course RED HARVEST.

The internet is a very important source for many metal fans – how do you use the internet and how important is it for you and other bands?
Perzonal War - The internet is very important for us – we need it to stay in contact with the fans, the bands and to spread our music and our site around the world.

Every band wants to become famous, touring etc… But what would you absolutely not do with Perzonal War or you don’t want to reach with the band?
Perzonal War - …We wouldn’t sell our souls for the industry – that means we would never do music we didn’t like.

Can you finish this sentence: In five year Perzonal War will be…
Perzonal War - Bigger than every band on this planet …or four old and randy guys, he he.

How do you feel about the metal scene in general at the moment?
Perzonal War - I think it’s o.k., maybe a little bit too much metal core- bands in the moment…but I think most of the new Metal Bands are on a very high musically level.

It seems that thrash metal comes back again…and hopefully we can help with our music to spread the metal all around the world!

But we should still be happy about every Rock / Metal Band who we can see on TV…

Which albums do you listen to the most at the moment and why these albums?
Perzonal War -
Oceansize  - music for nurses…   awesome Band, very emotional and atmospheric Songs.
Killing Joke – S/t. …this record gives me power & sickness for the day…also very emotional and doomy.
Meshuggah – I …these guys are totally crazy, I love them – and they motivate me in making music.
