Rwake play Sludge/Doom that actually goes beyond the stereotypes of the genres. Especially the vocal performances are very diverse and add a lot to the impression of this piece of work. You will find weirdness on this album as well as a wall of relentless heaviness. They do it very well, but Rest is not an easy album to get into. To be honest, it is also a bit uneven. Some of the (very long!) tracks don’t work for me, even after repeated spins of the album. On the other hand do the final track, “Was Only a Dream” really impress. It goes from quiet parts to violent outbursts and creates an atmosphere that drags in the listener and the nearly fourteen minutes feels not a second too long. Rest is a demanding album that demands a lot of the listener but fans of bands like Neurosis and Mastodon should give this a try. | ||||||||||||||||||
