'Ehm, what is this? A Gojira clone from Toronto, Canada?' Those were my initial thoughts when I listened to the first few notes of the title track of this album from Korpius. And although I'm a big fan of the French death metal/modern metal outfit, I thought it a bit cheap.

It turns out that there is no reason to fear full plagiarism, though. Although Gojira is most certainly a part of the big brew that is 'Shades of Black', there is also so much more, as the band draws on melodic death metal, modern metal and a squeeze of black metal and thus forms a heavy and brutal stew. It has a good drive and at the same time offers surprising and cool details - for example the superb harmonies that all of a sudden appear out of the blue in Disillusion.

Well-worth checking out for fans of death metal with a modern touch. Nice one!
