Illogicist is an excellent second generation’s represents of creative and technical death metal, heir apparent to Death, Atheist or Pestilence. The Italian band, formed in Aosta, has an impressive velocity and a strong personality despite its influences, from bands highly recommended anyway.

“Subjected” (2004) was a solid effort. “The Insight Eye” (2007) was a significant step forward: ambitious, brilliant, elitist, perhaps a bit hermetic. The Unconsciousness of Living” impressive as well, juggles like its predecessors with rhythms and breaks, harmonies and bridges. I guess it is alright what you can read on their website:” a musical proposal which is made up of rhythmic asymmetry, melodic dissonance and violent sound, its pivotal elements.”

Illogicist is also a bit easier to grip in 2011. It is not just “See and listen how good instrumentalists we are”, but also “get ready to bang your head with our music”, and it feels good. As often, the third record is a proof of maturity, getting the right balance between technique and musicality.

The first song “Ghosts of Unconsciousness” could have been a bonus track on Death “The Sound of Perseverance”: it is not an accusation of plagiarism, it is actually a compliment. The whole CD is a real pleasure. I hope now they will find the new drummer they are looking for: not anybody’s job!
