Silent Descent
Duplicity
Rating
Style: Gothic Death Metal
Release date: March 12th 2009

The members of Silent Descent seem quite young in age but this “Duplicity” album denotes a certain maturity that some more experienced bands will envy. With bountiful electronic sounds, Death Metal vocals interspersed with clean vocals and abrasive but melodic riffs, the style we have here is quite interesting. If one must compare this style to another band, Crematory is the most obvious one.

A major asset of “Duplicity” is the sound production - to be credited to the band’s own guitarist, Tom Callahan. I dare say that, judging from this album, there seems to be a burgeoning career as a record producer within Mr Callahan.

I didn’t quite dig the harmonised clean vocals, especially when used in direct conjunction with the more aggressive growls - however this was an aspect that didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment of the music. Personal favourites turned out to be ‘Bloodfucked’ and ‘Prepare to Fly’ both of which have a good balance of aggression, electronics and atmosphere.

This album has been out for quite a while so if you haven’t yet heard Silent Descent I suggest you do so straight away….with an open mind.
