First off, I must say that I have been mistaken about Mr Kotzen. I was never a fan of Mr. Big or Poison and have never paid much attention to this guy, although I knew he was probably a pretty skilled guitar player who just happened to have played in a couple of bands that I didn’t really fancy. After watching this DVD from a 2007 concert in Brazil, I have had to revise my opinion of him.

The recording featured on this DVD is of very good quality – the sound is clear, each instrument distinct, and the singing and guitar playing is given just the right amount of elbow room for Richie to stand out as the main man of this operation. Although it always bugs me a bit when a DVD of this kind only sports a 2.0 track instead of a full surround option, it’s no huge letdown considering the quality of the sound. The image is also okay, although there isn’t that much to see except for the three band members moving around a bit on the rather small stage. Guitar fans will of course be happy to know that there are “neck shots” aplenty allowing us to keep track of what Richie is doing on the fretboard.

The biggest surprise for me was Richie Kotzen’s singing. He has a very good and versatile voice, soulful like Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale and at times powerful like Chris Cornell (e.g. on Faith). Most of the compositions are bluesy rockers and rock ballads, and the band performs them all very well, stand out tracks (in my opinion) being A Love Divine, Fooled Again and the aforementioned Faith.

However, I must admit that I was disappointed with Kotzen's guitar playing. Most of his soloing (except for a fine effort on So Cold) is unimaginative, repetitive and poorly executed. I was definitely expecting more from this guy. Also, there’s the matter of whether this DVD should even be reviewed on a site such as this, as it is pretty far from being metal – it’s definitely closer to blues rock in the vein of Philip Sayce and Lance Lopez, although Kotzen lacks the power and energy that these two (and others) possess.

In conclusion I will say that I was pleasantly surprised to discover what a good singer he is (even more impressive since this is a live performance), but given that he is presented as a great guitar player rather than a vocalist he most certainly did not live up to my expectations. I’m sure, however, that fans of Richie Kotzen will feel that this DVD gives them their money’s worth. Also recommended to fans of soulful blues rock.
