Some bands need to redefine. British Gorerotted was one of them. They changed their name to The Rotted and have, according to the press material, taken quite a turn.
Personally, I have little knowledge of their previous work, but I can establish that the direction they’re taking on the whole is a solid one with a fresh mixture of death, punk and grind. The influences clearly range from the more (punk) rocking end of the spectre to Napalm Death and Carcass.
If they indeed used to be ‘just’ grind, The Rotted have definitely taken a turn by including atmospheric bits and bobs, e.g. the wonderful and catchy riff of A Return to Insolence. Noteworthy is also the almost demonstrative chunkiness of Kissing You With My Fist and the quiet beauty of A Brief Moment of Regret, leading directly into the double bass drum fury of The Body Tree.
The only minus of the album is the six and a half minute long instrumental 28 Days Later. It’s next to boring and could easily have been left out of this otherwise fine equation.
But – as I said already, on the whole a nice one – check it out!
