The most special thing about this band, is that they are from Serbia…

The album starts with an air raid alarm – I guess they can relate to that in another way than a lot of other of us...and the lyrics of ex. The One, about a despotic leader, and Death From Below, about land mines, gets another meaning when you have Serbia’s recent history in mind. I guess it’s not normal either, that you as a band have problems because of your style in music, or that a show is interrupted by the police because of “violent moshing”, but that’s apparently some of the difficult terms Space Eater had to deal with in the past.

Their band name comes from the Gamma Ray song of the same name, but that’s about it, that they have in common with this – the old Helloween albums with Kai Hansen is closer – 80’s European and American Thrash is a better description, both in composing, riffs and vocals.

They borrow a lot (not to say all) from their obvious (and named on their MySpace) sources of inspiration: Forbidden, Heathen, Agent Steel, Testament and even Iron Maiden. And that is the main problem for me with this release: there’s really nothing new to be found on this album in style or approach, it’s very much traditional old school Thrash Metal with elements of Speed, NWOBHM and maybe a bit of Power Metal added to it. Not that this is a bad album, but there’s nothing really surprising or especially catchy in any of the songs. I wish they had added something to the style, like for example incorporated something of the traditional style of music from their corner of the world – that could have made this release, and the band, more interesting.

The playing on the album is ok, but the vocalist shows his limitations on the higher notes in ex. Deceitful Eyes, but the general impressing is ok.

The sound could be described as “very authentic 80’s”, meaning that it’s not splendid, but not utterly bad either – it adds to the authenticity, but could have been done better (with better equipment probably).

I’m not overwhelmingly impressed by the cover art, done by Michael Gullbrandson, it’s ok, but not a strong selling point for the band, and looks a lot like everything else, done by underground bands.

Are you into the old school thrash thing, and don’t mind an “original sound”, try this one out. I hope they try something a little more original next time, then I’ll listen in a different way.
