Randy Piper is best known for his 2 CD's with WASP in the 80's.
'Violent New Breed' was the first release from the guitarist and his own band, now the second one is launched. "Cardiac Arrest" starts rather fast and heavy. You can immediately where Randy's roots lie. The style is the same as it was on the first two WASP records, but of course with a much better production.
Vocalist Rich Lewis sounds like the younger less raw brother of Blackie Lawless. That makes the songs sound even more like this is a new WASP-record. They have the same easy sing-a-long choruses. Is that a problem? Nope, it makes it very recognizable and familiar. I must confess that Rich is a better singer than Blackie. The song "Don't Wanna Die" is a rather simple one, "Crying Eagle" is again much better, for the first time I hear something fresh, one of the best songs of the album. Also the implementation of The Cranberries-cover "Zombie" is successful.
After the whole album I must honestly say that it is a nice listening record. Don't expect any spectacular new music. It is just a rock-album that straightaway grabs you by the balls and is a feast of recognition, at least if you liked the early WASP. If you hated their music in the eighties, you can better leave this one where it is as well.
