Wow... A
huge step forward for Nex... So much better than their 2006 self titled debut,
which in my opinion seemed a bit inconsistent, they had problems focusing on one
style and mixed happy punk rock with hardcore/metalcore elements. We don't see
as much happy punk rock elements as we did with their debut, instead we see SO
much more.
They added a
more progressive edge to their sound which is very welcome indeed, their style
seems a lot more versatile and mature by now, they ditched a lot of the punk
inspired choruses, instead they use a more conventional style of heavy metal in
their choruses, and that's not enough, they added orchestral arrangements this
time, which adds a more bombastic feel to the music, which suits them very well.
We still see some punk elements in their sound, but that doesn't matter at all
anymore, they are much more controlled, and the band seems to know what they want
to do, and why they want to do it.
I absolutely
love everything about the first five tracks. The Revenge explodes out of
your speakers after a calm piano intro, a very aggressive metalcore/hardcore
track. The lucky ones has a chorus I just can't get out a my head,
Which Hunting is one of best tracks the record has to offer, a small odyssey
of killing riffs with memorable vocal lines.... And it just works, the vocals of
Ed Dickinson isn't out of key as often more, he can sound much more passionate
when he needs to, just listen to Phantoms, you will not recognize
anything from their debut with this song, it almost reminds me of Norwegian
“Winds”. Actually there is not a bad track on the whole album.
I only have
one small complaint: The drums! Not that they a badly played, not at all, they
just seem to be mixed weird in the production, they seem weak and blurry, but it
doesn't kill the sound at all.
I'm really
surprised with this record, they indeed matured, I hope they will keeps this
style. I believe they have something to offer to every metal fan, you want old
school metal? It's there. You want new school metal? It's there. You want
aggressive? You get aggressive. You want passionate vocals...... Okay, you get
the point, they added a whole lot of new elements to their already existing
sound, tuned down the punk vibe a notch, and suddenly everything seems
coherent... Sounds weird, but this is one big metal melting pot which actually
works. Check 'em out at Myspace or buy the album.
