New
Eden hails from U.S.A. They play a progressive sort of bay-area-thrash with
roots in the eighties, which is all fine and dandy by me. The music itself is
very technical and cast a lot of different shapes, from atmospheric to
aggressive; the aggressiveness is especially represented by the omnipresent
riffs. I have absolutely no problem with progressive music, but from time to
time you meet bands where the so-called progressiveness seems a bit vehemently
pushed. New Eden is one of those bands. In my opinion they are trying to do way
too much, perhaps even more than they are actually capable of. The riffs are, as
mentioned, constantly changing and attacking you from all sides, the drums holds
a lot tempo changing and the vocalist sends a barrage of screams, which every
once and a while borderlines into a Rob “Halfordisch” highpitch-screaming, but
without the same quality what-so-ever. It seems frustrating in the long run, too
much is happening at the same time and the music dosen´t seem coherent at all. I
have given “Stagnant Progression” plenty of spins but nothing is memorable here,
unfortunately every time I put this sucker into my player it seems like a new CD
I have never listened to before.
Never the lees there are lot of positive things to say about “New Eden”, in
between the mayhem of riffs, I suddenly stumble over something really headbanging, where I throw my fist in the air and scream: “HELL YEAH”. Sadly, my
applause is cut short, by their constant aim to incorporate too many technical
details.
The band shows a
lot of promise, but is doing way too much to prove their talent. If they could
tone down the progressive edge, and focus on creating enjoyable thrash instead
of boosting their own egos, the band can most defiantly be one of the greats!
