I tried.
And I tried again.
And then once more.
I’ve been through the ‘5 Ways To Illuminate Silence’ around ten times now over the past two weeks, and that’s just about as much effort I’ll put into letting it grow on me.
It doesn’t. It’s grown a bit, not to be honest, not much.
In 24 minutes, the German six-piece take apart several genres of music and throw them into one big heap, and although there are hints of greatness, they never manage to bind everything together into a bow that I can cope with.
You have jazz, bongo drums, horns, acoustic guitars, funky guitars, keyboards, Middle Eastern sounds, death metal elements the Cynic way, growls, a dramatic (and slightly annoying) clean voice, even something that sounds like the progressive side of Queensrÿche. And it’s all very nice, but the outcome is not one that captures yours truly. The only song that really stands out is the ballad Katharsis – perhaps because it is a SONG.
Could be good, but isn’t really.
