To begin with I just got this CD along with the other (Powderhog) from the small Danish label Trechoma Records, and I wasn’t especially caught by it – it sounded too popped for my taste, and a lot of our readers will probably think the same, but still… after a few listens some of the numbers started to interest me…sort of opened up, although clearly being in the soft end of my taste.
The mixing is made by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Powderhog and many, many more heavy bands of northern Europe these days), and the sound is, as on all I’ve heard that passed through his hands so far, flawless: Fatbodied, crunchy and clear. On this album I especially like the sound on the drums, the guitars and the vocals – great!
And the vocals are something that you notice on this album – Mikkel has a very good melodic rock voice. And besides that, the craftsmanship of playing is very solid, and has a nice flow.
They call their music “darkpop” themselves, and says it can’t really be compared to anything existing. I don’t quite agree, I think of for example Foo Fighters (generally), King’s X (for example on Where Are We Heading) and sometimes something grungy-rockin’ like Pearl Jam, if you can imagine that mix, and sometimes with a more popped (Beatles-like?) attitude/sound blended into it.
Actually my only serious problem with this band and CD, is the incredibly unimaginative band name(!)...when you write so good songs and lyrics, couldn’t you have come up with something slightly more original guys?
The idea for the cover is ok, but could have benefited from a little more work in my opinion.
Funny enough my two favorite tracks of this album after several listens (“Getting Older?” and “Treadmill”) is not mentioned in the promo-material, as others are…and they aren’t the hardest on the album either, but the first has a very nice melody and the second a very cool progressive build and crossed rhythms, that has really caught me. Some of the tracks are a bit too much on the soft side for me, and some maybe not as inspired as others, but generally the album is a quite solid piece of work.
Why at least one of these tracks hasn’t been a radio-hit, really is beyond me…
Recommended tracks: Depends on your personal taste, personally I love Getting Older? And Treadmill, that is if you’re into the more melodic stuff – also because I can relate to the topics of the lyrics.
