Bloodyssey summarizes the German Mightiest's discography, being their 7th release in 13 years of existence. I find it odd not to have heard of them before, as their home page states "Mightiest was formed in 1994, exclusively performing black-metal. The whole music is based upon traditional and atmospheric black-metal, yet inspired by a unique identity, making it hard to find comparison to other well-known acts." I partly disagree with this statement: they reminded me very much of Mundanus Imperium, Norwegian band of the likes, but true enough they didn't last or become that well-known. Well...what to say. The two CDs present Mightiest's main achievements in a chaotic order (Disc I: MCD 2003 and Demo 1995; Disc II: Demo 1999), I suppose for place purposes. All three witness of ambitions to make old-school black-metal under a symphonic veil. As the band has grown, the symphonic character has become more predominant and more worked-out, although still simple, while the darker side in the music hasn't ended up becoming undertoned. In other words, the musical balance is better nowadays, and last but not least the production has evolved too. In spite of all this, this is music without much variation or character; it is catchy-ish at some point, majestic-ish but not enchanting, and the lyrical package is far too much of a cliché that could be taken more seriously in 1994 than today, but still. I suggest this record if you need new nice background music for the winter and are compelled by all things shadowy and dark.
