Illdisposed
Kulisselageret, Horsens, Denmark
Date: May 24th 2008

‘You all seem as if you’re fired up and ready to go?’

The ironic yet inquisitive remark comes from yours truly and is aimed at Illdisposed guitarist and mastermind Jakob Batten. This is mere minutes before the band is supposed to take to the stage in the small club Kulisselageret in Horsens.

The irony because Bo Summer and Batten himself aren’t doing warm-up exercises, looking anxious to get on stage or anything of the kind. They could, effectively, just be any of the other punters waiting outside the club for the gig to start.

‘It’s all very relaxed’ is the quiet answer from Batten.

Indeed it is.

The contrast to this low-key pre-gig behaviour becomes all the more stark as the first tones of the intro from the latest Illdisposed hammer album, ‘The Prestige’ starts flowing from the hands of Batten, bassist Jonas Kloge, drummer Thomas Jensen and new guitarist Franz Hellboss. Let Go leads directly into my favourite on the new album, The Key To My Salvation, a lesson in groove and heaviness.

It already now appears that the sound on this fine Saturday night is near-perfect for Illdisposed, although treble and mid have been compromised a bit – which, I suppose, is the compromise you want in Illdisposed’s case.

The choice of tunes is impeccable, with no less than six songs from ‘The Prestige’, Near The Gates from ‘Something Rotten…’, two from ‘Submit’, the mighty Throw Your Bolts from ‘Burn Me Wicked’, five ditties of death and destruction from the phenomenal ‘1-800 Vindication’.

With his usual panache, Bo Summer conducts an ongoing dialogue with the audience about important matters such as the future coach for the local football team and bassist Kloge’s participation in the carnival in Aalborg a couple of hours’ drive from Horsens.

And Summer's highly elequent rants are not the only entertainment tonight: The lads from The Burning are also here, and the oppurtunity to let Johnny Haven make a guest appearance on the vocals for Throw Your Bolts is not missed. He does that very well, by the way! Later, Thomas Jensen also leaves the drum stool to Toby from The Burning for one song. Good to see when bands can have fun and actually enjoy an evening like this with their mates.

That said, there aren’t a hell of a lot of people here tonight to take part in the fun. The club has a capacity of around 100, but it’s nowhere near full. Those who have managed to show up enjoy what they hear and get an entertaining gig. They even get a fight as three young punters decide to throw a few fists at each other at the very end of the gig.

And whilst these three are hauled out of the club by security, two or three others somehow manage to fall over the stage and into Jensen’s drum kit. How this is happens is not clear, but these lads are NOT popular with the band and are naturally also hauled out.

A bit annoying that the concert ends like this (and cuts off a couple of encores according to Jakob Batten). Guys, use your hands to make the horns, not for hitting each other. Stop being cunts and ruining the gigs for others.

As for the pictures for this event: I apologize, but I ran out of batteries after one shot – even my extras were flat! Fuck it.

Apart from these two minor mishaps, a perfect death metal night in Horsens!
