In a couple of days, the Winged Watcher will awake and pull our strings once more.
There's no doubt Keep of Kalessin would have managed to do a new Armada. 'Kolossus' has the same energy, but in my opinion calls back KOK's roots, being atmospherically more old-school.
Kalessin's albums tend to keep growing with each listening, and 'Kolossus' is no exception. This is tragic, epic, fierce, grips you at the core.
The profusion of details shows that all has been calculated; still you get a strong feeling of directness. Mind you, the record is again recorded in best Kalessin style, live in one take.
I've gained at least four favourites in hymns number 3, 4, 7, 9. The whole record is actually a feast of guitaristic technique that renews itself. The vocal performance is beyond compare and suits the music like a glove.
The drums are also one of the highlights. The blast-beats somehow keep in the background, while the front of the sound picture is left free for the cymbals and characteristic riffs. No use to get technical here, the ones who are into music nerding can do like me, turn up the volume and let the lava crawl into them.
Kalessin show exceptional style integrity, yet diversity. They have it all.
I'll give 'Kolossus' no less than 98 points of musical prowess and 2 of pure subjectivity.
