Ghost
Circus
is the perfect proof of that progressive rock is universal; two guys meet in an
internet message board divided by an ocean; Ronald Wahle living in the
Netherlands and Chris Brown living in Tennessee, USA.
This
collaboration has resulted in two albums: 'Cycles' from 2006 and now the
ambitious 'Across the Line', which is a concept album that lyrically follows one
man's path from death to the hereafter; a ghost story from an unique
perspective.
The melting
pot of Ghost Circus has been filled with elements from classic
progressive rock, AOR, metal and some classic alternative rock. The outcome is a
good and diverse rock album, which has its ups and downs, mostly ups...
They go all
the way with the albums epic: "Through the Light" where they really show what
they are capable of musically as well technically. "Pathway", "Losing Time" and
the title track is three other fine progressive songs, while songs like "To Be"
and "Holding On" never really sparkles...
The two
areas where I think they really need to improve: the production needs to be
better, and I am not too impressed by Chris Brown's voice on the album. Those
things need to be better to take this band beyond this point, but 'Across the
Line' is not a bad album at all.
