When you not once but twice within a short period of time have
been taken by surprise by a band from a country you normally don't think of in
terms of progressive rock then you start to wonder how many undiscovered small
gems this small country still has to offer?
Ephrat is just like their fellow country-men Amaseffer
hailing from the Holy Land; Israel, and 'No One's Words' is their debut album,
mixed by none other than Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree). Mastermind, guitarist,
flutist, keyboard player and sole composer Omer Ephrat has composed a very well
balanced,
sophisticated progressive rock album that has a fine balance
between traditional progressive rock elements and more ethnic and Mediterranean
elements.
Steven Wilson is not the only prominent musician lending a
helping hand on this album; Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation) has written the
lyrics for "The Sum of Damage Done" and is also handling the lead vocals on this
almost 10 minutes long epic, giving the song a PoS-flair with his very distinct
voice. Petronella Nettermalm (Paatos) pops up on two songs with her soprano
singing style, adding another dimension to those songs.
With influences raging from the early 70's (Yes, King Crimson,
Rush) to newer rock bands (Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater etc.) there is plenty
of unspoiled and honest music to be found on this well composed and executed
debut album.
It is always nice to pleasantly surprised when you least
expects it, and I am sure this band will find many new fans among progressive
rock fans with this album...
