One of the truly refreshing things for a reviewer is when a really young band enters the stage with a complete lack of respect for genre boundaries. Therein lies the development of music, methinks.
Take the young Brits in Early Grave. Their debut, 'Tomorrow I Am You', takes a traditional, frankly not terribly good black/death metal guitar sound and mixes it with blastbeats, a snarling growl and...melodic choir chants plus hardcore gang shouts and metalcore grooves. To go with that we have a set of emo-like lyrics just to confuse things a bit more.
The combination is unique, and despite the weird, bordering on the annoying, mix/production, I find myself liking this more and more with each spin.
This is a band you should watch out for - I think they have plenty to offer the music business!
