If you
combine the grizzly attitude of Motörhead, the abyssal groove and
raw metal sound of Reverend Bizarre, the droning, dark and wailing
attributes of Danzig, with the production “quality” of Venom and
Gehennah (the Swedish thrashers), AND is very very good… You might
just play in this marvelous band, called Devil’s Whorehouse.
The
Whorehouse has released a full length album and an EP before this
one, but they never found their way to my shelves. That’s gonna
changes now! This is – by far! – the most rocking and rolling metal
EP, I’ve heard in years. It has everything. Black metal, rock n’
roll, OI!, thrash, all the best in life, perfectly blended, and set
to themes of mythology, evil powers, and the degeneration of Man.
Its made, in
part, by Morgan; guitarist of mighty Marduk, primary member of the
mysterious Abruptum, and guitarist of the 80’s cult-thrash band
Damien – in other words, quite a phenomenon in himself. Morgans
influence is obvious, and his large experience too. On vocals a guy
called Maelstrom sounds like an unholy genetic experiment, created
by cells from big league legends Lemmy Kilmister and Glenn Danzig –
no shit, he does! – a voice that makes every tiny hair on your body
tickle with fright, and at the same time sends your liver into
beer-craving frenzies.
The songs (oh
so few, on an EP) hits three mayor feels: The early Norwegian black
metal wave (Werewolf), the Rhythm n’ Metal of Misfits, Samhain and
Danzig (Mouth of Hell), and thrashy punk/metal (Pentagram Murderer)
– the last one a clear instant-live-success, I’m sure.
Actually, I
could keep writing about these three songs for hours. My neighbors
must be getting tired of them, but I simply can’t. This rocks!
