This is my first review. I’d really hoped, that it would be a more positive one. So it goes…
The latest album from the Danish quintet Corpus Mortale actually proves many of the stereotypical accusations non-metalheads make about death metal. Its monotonous in the extreme, when you take into account what other brutal death bands are able to do, without breaking the conventions of the subgenre. Its not easy to tell one song from the next. Its all fast drums and rather boring and simple riffs – made complete with a devastating lack of melody. Yep, it’s the boogieman of death metal in the minds of the uninitiated. Now, that wouldn’t be half as bad, if it was original in some way, but it isn’t.
Its classic and stuffed with clichés (and we know that clichés are good because they work!), but that’s just not enough, in my opinion. Not on the third full length album. A band should evolve, just a little bit. Oldschool is fine, but not when its all about doing exactly the same music (well, sound-wise anyway) that Morbid Angel and Obituary did years ago.
It’s a solid album. You wont find many technical mishaps, and the sound techs did a very good job indeed. But it lacks the ear-catching quality that would elevate it beyond the status of background music.
