Now, Viking death metal from the Iberian Peninsula is not seen every day and on grounds of that fact alone, Spanish outfit Runic deserve some attention. Apart from that, the sextet doesn’t exactly accomplish groundbreaking feats with their second outing, “Liar Flags”.

If you listen to the album, you’ll notice the pagan/folky elements of Amorphis and the keyboard sweeps of Dimmu Borgir. This is mixed with the occasional female vocal, flutes, pipes and the predominantly black metal sounding vocal of Juan.

It’s hard for me to spot exactly what it is that does it, but the album seems to me slightly unfocused and not as heavy as it seemingly wants to be. A shame, because it sounds like these guys really have the potential - not unlike Moonspell had back in the day. Make the next one a hammer, dudes.

Recommended: “Ambush” (the most catchy tune on here – combining Amorphis and Dimmu quite brilliantly) and “To the Fallen” (has a light a floating riff that I just love).
