Interview with Erik Rundqvist (bass, vocals) - Vomitory (June 4th 2009)

One of last months best deathmetal albums was released by Vomitory. Time for the powerofmetal to update you with this latest news about this release.

Can you update us about what the band has been doing after the release of ‘Terrorize, Brutalize, Sodomize’?

Erik: Hi! After the release of TBS we have been doing some festivals in Sweden and a couple of festivals in Germany and our first festival in the US, and then some club gigs around Europe, but not as many as we wanted to do. So after a couple of years working together with 'I’m In the band Productions' we desided to change to 'Blast Corpse Promotion'  Now we have a lot of gigs coming up to promote our new record. And of course we have been writing songs for the new CD Carnage Euphoria.

Who is responsible for most of the song-writing on the new record ‘Carnage Euphoria’?

Tobias our drummer is the main song writer, he has done every song, except 2 that’s been done by Peter, our main guitar player. I guess that Tobias has done over 80% of the Vomitory songs for every record, so he is clearly the main writer when it comes to music. Our lyrics are mostly written by myself, but on this record I had too much to do outside the band so both Peter and Tobias helped with the lyrics. Normally I use to write almost everything but it was good to have someone else write lyrics too so we get some new points of view there.

Does the title have a certain message for us?

No, we just wanted something that should fit on a death metal record, we had a couple of ideas but this one was the best one in our opinion.

Nice cover artwork, what does the band want to point out with it?

Well to be honest we all had different ideas of how the cover should look like to the title, but when we talked to Björn the guy who made the cover we just told him the album title and nothing else, so he had to come up with all ideas himself and I think he made a good work for us. Same as last question, we needed a cover that should fit to the title and on a death metal album.

This is your 7th record, a holy number. Are the expectations high this time?

Holy number? Dunno about that, but at least we have high expectations on our self, we need to improve for every new CD without destroying the Vomitory sound and at least in our opinion we did succeed with that on this record. A good mix of blast and crust and so on, maybe a little more heavier songs on this one than on our previous, but this is what we come up with this time and we are satisfied with the result.

Personally I think the new record is again a step forward. Better songs, better production etc. etc. Does the band still practice once a week, or is it learning on the road?

We still try to rehearse at least once a week. If we have some tour, or a couple of gigs we try to make it  2-3 times a week like 2 weeks before we leave, but it’s not just for the practise we meet. We are really good friends and have a good time every time we meet so we can just sit and talk bullshit for a couple of hours as well and talk about future gigs and so on.

The Swedish (Gothenburg) sound is a big part of your music, also Slayer influences pass by, but what are further influences?

Well the Gothenburg sound in our opinion takes no part in our music, we think we sound as far away from that sound as possible. The Gothenburg style is often connected with a lot of melodies in the sound and a light screaming voice, we have almost no melodies and no light voice. But yeah, we all listen to Slayer and a lot of old Death metal bands like, Entombed, Grave, Bolt Thrower and Napalm death etc etc. Peter is a little bit younger then the rest of us so he has brought some more thrashier sound to the band. That is  a good mix to what we already play. He also has another band that plays thrash called The Law, check it out, really cool music.

Next thing will be touring with Malevolent Creation! Who will be supporting who? And what countries will be on the program?

I guess they headline, they haven’t toured Europe for a long time. I think, that we will have some opening band with us, I’m not sure what band yet but I guess it will be out soon. The tour dates are on our website, we gonna play in some countries this time that we haven’t visited that often like Spain and Italy, really cool countries to play in so that should be fun. Then our first time in Portugal and Slovenia, and then in Germany The Netherlands, Belgium France and so on, gonna be a cool tour.

Are there some Festivals on the program too?

Yeah the gig inPortugal is a festival and the last 2 gigs is also festivals in Germany where bands like Cannibal Corpse are gonna play as well.

I can imagine that 20 years ago you called the band Vomitory (being young and having hangovers all the time), but would you have chosen the same band name if you started the band today?

Yeah it’s a good name and it suits the music, and the hangovers all the time is still here, even now when we are older J

What’s the worst thing that happened the band on tour in your 20 years of existence?

I guess when we travelled on a highway in France and the tyre of the bus got loose and rolled over on the other side of the high way. Luckily nothing happened but if that tyre would have hit a car someone would have died. Some other shit did happen on other tours as well, back in 2003 that bus driver sucked a lot when we toured Europe together with Amon Amarth. But something happens with the bus almost everytime on tour like: no heat, a broken TV or broken fridge and stuff like that.

Same question, but then the nicest thing?

Guess the first time we toured with Cannibal Corpse back in 2000, those guys are the best guys in the world, we had a really really good time on that tour, party every night.

You can be God for one day, what would be the first thing you do?

Kill every child molester, those fuckers should not live an extra second.

What 5 albums would you give an alien, to let the entity learn very fast what metal is?

Black Sabbath, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Master of Puppets, Iron Maiden, Piece of mind, AC/DC, Back in black and Slayer, Reign in Blood.

Any other message or story you want to share with our readers?

Not at this time but I wanna thank you for this interview and to the readers that take their time to read about Vomitory, and hopefully we will see you guys on the road, thanks a lot.
