Interview with Dawn of Tears (August 2009)
|
Hi, first off all I just want to congratulate you with “Dark Chamber Litanies”. Are you satisfied with it?
Hi, and thanks a lot! Yes, we are very satisfied with it, the sound, the cover, the songs, lyrics… all of our efforts and the people who have worked on it did a great job, and the reviews have being great. Taking into account that our album is self-financed and we don’t have a label contract, the response has been incredible.
How did you get your name DAWN OF TEARS?
-Well, we started to play without a name in our two initial shows, and the first name that we had chosen was the name of another band of our country. We were lucky to realize at time! So, one night we changed the name of the band to Dawn Of Tears, we know that it’s not a very original name…, but anyway… I think that it connects with the essence of the melancholy of our lyrics.
How would you describe your music to any of our readers who may not have heard of you before?
-It’s very hard for me to describe the music, because… you have to listen to it, I think. Maybe our style rides between “Swedish death metal”, “melodic black metal”, “German power metal”, “Gothic metal”, “dark metal”… We usually say that D.O.T. is a mixture between Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Cradle Of Filth, Blind Guardian, Sentenced… more or less.
When can we expect new music from you?
-We think that we can’t go further on our own, so we are searching for a label with a serious offer, because we wanna spread our music everywhere and play live shows all around the world…, that’s our dream and we are still fighting for it, since 10 years ago. We want to release our next album in 2010, self-financed or with a label, either ways.
Where do you get your inspiration from and how do you usually write a song?
-We take our inspiration from gothic fantasy, vampire stories, esoteric and oniric elements, terror movies and literature…, all mixed with personal feelings, love, rage, despair, sorrow…
J.L. Trébol is the music composer and when he presents a new song, we take it to make the arrangements. Between the both of us we make the lyrics, being influenced by the own music, we say… “What is this music is suggesting to us…?”, and we develop the story in each song after that.
Let's speculate - you have been granted a free slot on a tour of your own choice - who would be your ideal touring partners?
-We are proud to have shared stage with some of our idols and other great bands, and that made the dream come true for a while. Bands like Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquillity, Charon, Amon Amarth, Onslaught, Moonsorrow… The only ones that we had talked to them closely were Dark Tranquillity. They’re really nice people, and it would be an honour to share a tour with them. But there´s a lot of bands we wish we could share a tour with, also from Spain, like our friends “Runic”.
What albums or bands do you believe have had the greatest impact on the history of Metal?
-So many, really… The biggest ones for me have been Metallica, Iron Maiden, Manowar, Marilyn Manson, Machine Head, My Dying Bride, Black Sabbath, Guns & Roses, Megadeth, Blind Guardian, Pantera, Sentenced, Cradle Of Filth, Dark Tranquillity… and many, many more, the list never ends, but that´s my opinion, next time I’ll ask my band partners to prepare questions like this seriously, right?
Looking ahead, where do you want to be five years from now?
-We want to sign with a serious label which can support us to spread our metal all around the fucking world, make our dream come true and give to the metal world the best as we can.
I thank you very much for participating in this interview. Any final words you would like to round off with?
-Thank you so much for the interview, so for the rest, give us an opportunity and listen to our albums. Thanks again and greetings from Spain!
