Interview with Henrik Rangstrup - guitars - Chaoswave (February 4th 2009)

The band Chaoswave will release their second album in Europe at the beginning of March. This Italian band was strange enough started by a Danisch guy. Their first record was already a rather good effort and in my opinion their second one is even better. When Henrik read the review on our site, he contacted us with the question if we wanted to interview him. And we at power metal would not be real metal fans if we would let this opportunity pass. Below you find the result of that.

Why does a Danish guitarist decide to live in Italy?

Henrik: The good old love story. My girlfriend through many years is Italian and we met in Denmark. I found a job in Italy and decided to give it a try. I always believed that I should follow the paths that life gives me.

The name Chaoswave is it chosen because of the music the band stands for, many different styles and tempo changes trying not to sound chaotic but creating a kind of wave in it that starts at the bottom and also always ends at the bottom? Or is it just a cool name?

Henrik: I started the band and made the band name, an I had a clear purpose with the name. Both lyric wise and music wise I like playing with contrsts. Our music definitely has a contrast between the clean vocal style and the aggressive music. And the lyrics often have the same game of contrast.

After “The White Noise Within” you played several gigs throughout Europe. Can you tell something about it and how successful where these gigs?

Henrik: We have played 3 smaller European tours, as well several "weekend tours" and on-off festivals. And I think we did pretty good. Some of the best concerts have been the Progpower Festival 2006 (NL), Metal Female Voices 08 (Be) and Aalborg Metal Festival 08 (DK) But besides festivals I remember really good audiences in Denmark actually. I think we did 5 tours in Denmark  and had many great shows there. Especially the last tour with Compos Mentis was a blast!

Our worst experience is without doubt being denied access to the US by a Chuck Norris police type. We were playing the Chicago Powerfest 08 but ran into the famous Visa restrictions... not that we were unaware.. just very unlucky to meet the wrong guy. He had a moustache by the way...

You left DVS records, not satisfied with their support?

Henrik: We had a 1 album deal, and it was good for the debut, but we needed to set up the pace. Nevertheless, our debut paved the way and DVS did a good job and we received some quite amazing reviews.

Is it correct to say that you signed a deal with Lance’s Nightmare Records and that he decided to coöperate with Silverwolf productions, or is it that you have a deal for the U.S.A. with Nightmare Records and a deal for Europe with Silverwolf?

Henrik: Yes, we signed with Nightmare and then he sublicensed to Silverwolf/SPV for Europe, Japan and Australia. Silverwolf is doing a great job by the way, so we are very happy with that.

Your new record “Dead Eye Dreaming” was mixed by Andy LaRocque, is that because you come original from Denmark, are was he just the perfect guy to do the job.

Henrik: You could say that. In the sense, that I proposed to the band to try Andy, as I have been a fan of King Diamond for ages, and knew that Andy was a great producer. He also showed to be the perfect guy for the job. I can't recommend him enough!

I wrote in the review that the music has a lot of  Nevermore and Lacuna Coil influences. Can you live with that?

Henrik: We heard this comparison many times, and we don't mind, It's a way to describe our music, and as a smaller band you need the comparison to bigger bands so readers can understand what the music is all about. I am a big fan of Nevermore, but funny enough there is not one single member that listens to Lacuna Coil. We have great respect for what they achieved though.

Who is responsible for most of the song writing?

Henrik: I bring most of the ideas, but song writing is a band thing.

Is it a coincidence that the title ‘Dead Eye Dreaming’ looks like a combination of two of  Nevermore’s albums ‘Dreaming Neon Black’ and ‘Dead Heart in a dead World’?

Henrik: A total coincidence, but I get your point. Two great albums by the way. The real story behind the album title is a bit particular. I was writing the lyrics for the sequel of the song "Blind Eye Dream", and I needed a title to make a clear connection. To focus with a blind eye and to dream with a dead ey, are basically 2 sides to the same story, and so I came up with Dead Eye Dream. I liked that title, it's easier to remember and thought it could actually fit to the whole album. So I twisted a tiny bit, did a google search on "dead eye dreaming" and it came back with zero results. At that point it was an easy choice!

Your music style is rather complex and has a lot of variety, some progressiveness and still very heavy. What influences are there more in your music?

Henrik: The 5 band members listen to everything from pop to black metal. When on tour we have a hard time agreeing on what should be on the stereo. So our influences really come from every where. Personally I listen to "modern" metal, you know, Nevermore, Machine Head, Devildriver, Soilwork. And then again, anything metal goes well with my stereo.

A lot of bands nowadays have male and female vocals. Was that your intention right from the start.

Henrik: Not really. The idea was to create atmosphere through the vocal work, as a contrast to the music. I didn't want any keyboards, and the male/female thing just worked out well. The double vocals have become very trendy though, but who cares, as long as it sounds good. Nevertheless, we try our best to do things our own way.

On the info we get from Silverwolf Productions we see a photo with Giorgia Fadda in front and the rest of the band is somewhere standing unrecognizable in the back. Are you all that ugly? Hehehe..

Henrik: I am, hahaha... well, we have to remember that the metal world is really male dominated, so even if we tried to avoid it there would always be more attention towards Giorgia. So we try to avoid the exaggerated "sexy female" promotion, while we keep in mind how the game works.

What is the idea behind the cover artwork?

Henrik: I created the artwork and I just wanted it simple and effective this time around. So I tried to make it reflect the album title. If you have the full cd cover, you will notice the stripes (from the guys eyes) turn into birds. The birds are the dreams and you will find them several places in the booklet images as well.

I have the U.S.A. version of the record. As a bonus track there is a cover of a Dutch band called 2-Unlimited with the song No Limit. Why on earth did you choose that song, although I must say you did quite a good job.

Henrik: Hahaha, thanks. one of the songs that raved the stereo in the tourbus the last years, was No Limit. Stupid and happy in the same time. Good party song for metal heads, hahaha. We just raised the fun level and made a cover.

Why is there another bonus track on the European version?

Henrik: It's only on the US version because we needed different bonus songs for the releases. in the US the album was already released in November 2008, while it won't be out until March 09 in Europe. We really would have wanted it on the European version too, but we had to think of the commercial aspect.

What is in your opinion the biggest difference and step forward with this record, when you compare it with your debut?

Henrik: I think we are better songwriters and better musicians. As simple as that. The debut was good, this is great.

Going on tour this Summer?

Henrik: Hopefully. We are working on some single shows and festivals, but we are searching for the right booking agency to get us on the bigger tours.

What do you expect from the new album? It has been out in the U.S.A. for a while, is it doing well and what are the reactions so far?

Henrik: I expect it to do better than the first, and just hope the best. The US promotion actually only just started, so the reviews have only started to come in and they seem very promising. The reactions from our fan base have been very very good though.

What are your favourite 5 all-time albums?

Henrik: Maybe the following. Some of them I listen to rarely, but they are albums I don't expect ever to grow tired of.

Metallica"...and Justice for All"

Nevermore "This Godless Endeavor"

Sanctuary "Into the Mirror Black"

Judas Priest "Painkiller"

Iron Maiden "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"

Your final words to our readers in Denmark and the rest of the world are…...
