Interview with Cede Dupont, Symphorce (September 28, 2005)

Hi, first off I just want to congratulate you on your new album. To new fans could your please fill us in on the history behind it all?
Cede -
The band was founded in 98, when Andy B. Franck decided to leave Ivanhoe and do something else, …..up to date we have 5 records, I think people might wanna check us out at www.symphorce.net to find out more about the history ;-)

How has your new album been received by the media?
Cede -
Ow so far, it has been great really, ……..we didn’t expect a lot to be honest, I mean we’re damn proud about what we had done with Godspeed, but you never how press/fans are going to like it. But so far, what I read about the new album, the response is awesome!

I know artists are not happy to categorize their music, but how would you describe your music to an outsider?
Cede -
Well, I don’t hate to categorize ourselves, it’s just so damn hard, hahaha ……I think maybe we play some style of Modern-Power-Melodic-Thrash-Groove-Metal ……I think that might be it don’t you think? hehe

How would you compare "GodSpeed" to "Twice second", and what are the main evolutions and changes for you?
Cede - For sure the production, …….I think Godspeed has the best sound we had on a Symphorce record ever, so that’s for sure the main difference. Musically I just think that it’s that next step we took after Twice Second, ….it’s quite the same way we went writing songs, and how they sound, so I don’t see that much difference concerning that, all in all, I just think that we grew up us musicians and songwriters, which makes "GodSpeed" a better album in my opinion.

My personal highlights are "Everlasting Life" and "Wounds Will Last Within", what is your favourite track on "GodSpeed" and why?
Cede - Hard to say, as it changes everyday, ………When I wrote "Everlasting Life" for example it wasn’t one of my faves at all, ….but after we recorded it, it was one of my personal highlights! …..Other faves are "Nowhere", "The Mirrored Room", "Crawling Walls For You" and "Haunting"………….hell wait, that’s all songs I wrote, so no doubt why they are my faves, hahahaha

Did everyone contribute to the songs or is it determined who writes the songs?
Cede - Actually this is the way it works for Symphorce: me and Dennis write songs, and after they are arranged Andy comes up with vocal lines and lyrics, ……….for "GodSpeed" Markus wrote more songs that fit to the album than Dennis did, …….it’s just a natural thing where a song begins and ends, ……..so whether it fits on an album or not, everybody has the right to bring himself in with ideas and stuff, I mean if you take Sascha for example, he doesn’t write songs, ……….but without his perfect drumming on godspeed, the album or the songs wouldn’t sound as cool as they do now. So all the 5 members in Symphorce have they responsibility and creativity for our music…..

Could you describe what the songs are about, one by one or in general?
Cede -
In general we just wanna KICK SOME FUCKING ASS! HAHAHA………

And is there a correlation with the cover artwork?
Cede - Not really, we just had the album title, and then Travis Smith worked that thing out, I think it looks cool, ……

Were there any songs that didn't make it onto the album, but will be used (reworked or not) on a next album?
Cede -
Who knows! I think all in all we wrote like 20 songs and a couple of Dennis’ song ideas didn’t’ make it for the album, but let’s see what happens with that stuff…..

What are your plans, now that the new album is out?
Cede -
Well we just played a European Tour with Sonata Arctica and we’ve been to the States for the first time as well……..all that happened in the last three weeks, and I think we will some more single shows in the next months, let’s see how things work out.

With which band(s) would you like to tour, if you had the choice?
Cede -
Musically, probably Nevermore, because that would be a good audience, …….ticket sales wise, I’d go for Metallica, hahaha

What is the fondest memory you have of the band since its inception and what is the most bitter?
Cede - We have bitter experiences all the time, cause music business is a shit business where all your efforts, energy and heart might get a fist by some bad decisions, …….but that’s more the smaller part, ……….all in all we’re damn happy to have what we have, and we have TONS of awesome and memorable experiences!

What albums are currently spinning in your stereo right now?
Cede -
Children of Bodom, their new one.

I wonder, if you might make all-time albums Top 5?
Cede -

  • Guns 'n’ Roses – Appetite for Destruction
  • Metallica – Metallica
  • Nevermore – Dead Heart In A Dead World
  • Skid Row – Slave to the Grind
  • Queensryche – Operation: Mindcrime

What new and exciting things can we expect in 2005 from Symphorce and do you have any last words for our readers?
