Interview with Ignazio Nicastro, Fuoco Fatuo (August 1, 2005)

Hi, Ignazio, you are a young band from Italy with a couple of demos in circulation and not many might know your background so if you could fill us in on the history behind it all?
Ignazio - First of all I wish to thank You Kenn and all at PowerMetal.dk for your support…
A big hail to all the Danish Metal Heads.
Fuoco Fatuo was born in 1999, when I (bass) and Giangabriele (guitars) met for the first time at school. We play some time together, and decided to write some serious song. After a some time Angelo (voices) came in, and then Giuseppe (keys). We started writing “Tenebra’s Dream” in the early 2001, and published it in 2002.”Of Light and Dark” is from 2003 – 04. Now we are in the studio to record “Nemesis: the Elegy of Sin”, our new album.

How has your demos been received by the media?
Ignazio - I must admit I really didn’t expect all the great words spent on our two pieces of work. ”Tenebra’s Dream” first, and “Of Light and Dark” later, both received a lot of great reviews from each zine we sent it to… Great!!!

I know artists don¹t like to put a label on their music - but a spaceship from outer space has just landed in your backyard, and is demanding an answer - so how would you describe your music to an alien from another galaxy?
Ignazio - Fuoco Fatuo plays METAL. Our backgrounds are various and different, and this explains the reason why you can find Power, Progressive, or Classic Metal in each song…, but we play Metal without fake labels that could confuse the audience.

If your music was an emotion, which one would it be?
Ignazio - Probably melancholy… or maybe wrath… what a hard question…

Who and what inspires you when you write a song? Walk us through the creation of a song?
Ignazio - Usually we play something on our own and later we try it all together, so our influences may differ a lot… It depends by our spirit at the moment… I write most of my bass lines when I’m home, then I write the lyrics… I like talking about my experiences and my emotions, and I always try to create a kind of symbiosis between music and lyrics.

To what subjects do your lyrics refer to, and who writes them? And what inspires you when you write your lyrics?
Ignazio - As I told before are my emotions to guide me… I write the most of lyrics, and sometimes together with Angelo or Giangabriele. When I write the concept of “Tenebra’s Dream” I was inspired by all the emotions regarding the dualism of Man…. It is a thing I feel very strong about and I still love to talk about that in my lyrics.

Who has produced and mixed the demos, and are you pleased with the end result, and what could have been done better?
Ignazio - Both our works are produced by ourselves in our studios, the “Maze of Steel” studios... I think they are quite good, but in general the production of “Tenebra’s Dream" isn't clear enough. ”Of Light…” is better, as you can hear…. We bought a lot of new instruments before starting the recordings. The result is really satisfying.

Who has done the artwork? And how important do you feel it is to have a great cover?
Ignazio - Giuseppe loves graphic software, so both our covers have been realised by him… I think covers isn’t so important. Of course the package must be good, but too many times people care too much about the outside, forgetting that the most important thing is the music.

Do you have any touring plans, or is it only possible to play shows locally?
Ignazio - We played a lot here in Sicily , after publishing “Of Light…”. Now we are really busy with the new record. We’ll think about live shows after publishing it.

Let’s speculate – you have been granted a free slot on a tour of your own choice – who would be your ideal touring partners?
Ignazio - Oh… just three names, but should be many more… Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Nevermore… dreaming is good…ah, ah, ah…

What kind of wishes and expectations do you have for a record label and management?
Ignazio - The most important thing is the promotion. Bands want to be promoted at the best, and I think is a right thing… Without the right promotions a label is not a label!

The internet is a very important source for many metal fans – how do you use the internet and how important is it for you and other bands?
Ignazio - It was and still is very important for the underground bands… We have the opportunity to contact a lot of people only by a click… In the past everything about the underground were a lot more difficult.

And how do you feel about the progressive metal scene in general at the moment?
Ignazio - It is very good, but sometimes there are no differences between the bands.

Which song do you consider to be the best one you have ever written?
Ignazio - “Arkanangel”… is a song of the new album I wrote on my own… it is my spirit of music!

Which song do you wish you had written and why?
Ignazio - Oh shit… all by Iron Maiden and Nevermore… but one in particular: “Alexander the Great”!

Name an album, person or event that has had a huge influence on your life … and why?
Ignazio - “Powerslave” by Iron Maiden... Changed my way of living and seeing music. It is THE HEAVY METAL.

Which music do you personally listen to at home?
Ignazio - METAL, METAL and METAL... all the rest means nothing to me… (Maybe I’m a little close minded????)

Vinyl has had a small comeback lately – do you still prefer “the old sound” or are you a CD/DVD kind of guy?
Ignazio - Vinyl or CD, that’s the problem… Both!!!

Last question - do you have any famous last words for our readers?
Ignazio - Hi Power Metal Readers… Support metal and only what give you real emotions.
